Exercise is good for you.
CSV president Murray Vagg has a proposal for you, one that uses fellowship to foster great lettering. Get set for a real meeting of Minds!
Ever since I joined the CSV I have wondered why we haven’t included actual calligraphy at our meetings. I would like to get this happening by encouraging members to take part in a bi-monthly exercise. The aim would be two-fold; to improve our calligraphy skills by more practice, and encourage more members to attend meetings; both desirable goals.
Proposed Format
There will be a different assignment every two months, for which there will be a prize.
It has been decided that all those in attendance at the April meeting will take part in judging the month's entries and nominating their favourite piece. All nominations will be tallied and the winner chosen.
The JUNE 2012 Project
The June project is to feature A DECORATED CAPITAL.The only restriction is the letter must not be gilded. The choice of letter and style, decoration and medium is entirely open.
Send them in by the June meeting and as usual there will be a prize for the best effort and it will be published in Postscript and on the web.
ALTERNATE MONTHS
At the meeting in between the set exercise months, we would like people to bring samples of pieces they are working on, or have finished, to discuss with, or show to other members. There may be something you would like advice with, or an opinion on.
It would be particularly interesting to see pieces that people might be doing for Roehampton, or other courses they may be undertaking.
To make this idea work we need people to participate, so let's give it a go and see what transpires!
April 2012 Project
The entry adjudged the most popular for the April meeting was that done by Sarah Dehn. The image is shown below
Here is the the body of work as enlarged by the webmaster, to try to show the detail.
If you cannot attend the meeting we will accept postal entries posted to the CSV prior to the meeting, or send your entry along with someone who is coming. WE WANT AS MANY MEMBERS AS POSSIBLE TO TAKE PART.
As a matter of interest, when we did our “Postscript” survey, the thing that members most wanted to see in it was (unsurprisingly) calligraphy! Given that, I believe it is probable that members would also like to see more calligraphy at meetings. So, here is an opportunity to make that happen, and put a bit more interest into our meetings. M Vagg. President.
