Have you struggled to learn the basics of the beautiful Copperplate style of calligraphy?

In this workshop (specifically designed to provide a thorough grounding in all the basics) you will be guided through pointed pen handling techniques, basic strokes, a basic form of minuscule and majuscule letterforms and fluency practice.

The workshop is designed to refine skills for those who have more experience, and to provide a complete introduction for those just starting with pointed pen. More experienced students will work with pen lift technique enabling results on more difficult papers, whilst beginners will commence their pointed pen journey with a more basic style - experienced students should be prepared to revisit all the basics!.

Although you will complete some fun mini-lettering projects along the way, this is a lettering workshop and will require students to complete solid practice between workshops.

Graham is a well known here for his new and interesting workshops, this will be no different.

In this workshop we will make a book. One with contrasting pages of the random and abstract images with illegible calligraphic marks in combination with the calculated and precise forms of formal calligraphy.

From crisp, clean, controlled precision of the undressed letter form to the spontaneous, free and random image of the abstract. Colour against black and white, order next to chaos, simple against complex, minimum against maximun, side by side.

This workshop will be a fun 2 days and suitable for all levels.

This workshop takes a journey through a process of preparing surfaces -

. by stretching paper permanently over a canvas, and onto boards.

. adding a background that can have variable textures using gesso

. and different ways of adding colour and lettering onto a gessoed surface.

By the end of the 2 days you should have at least one finished piece!.

This workshop will take a minimalist approach to Calligraphy concentrating on the strength of hand, space and light. We will work black on white, white on black, and add a hint of gold, colour or the embossed Mark.

We will be travelling through the gothic periods with scripts such as Textura.

We are going to apply our work according to the words of Robert Henri 1865 - 1929. Know what the old masters did, know how they composed their pictures, but do not fall into the conventions they established.

This workshop will concentrate on mark making, space creating and, most importantly, honing your lettering skills.

Gemma is a very well qualified tutor being a HFCLAS as well as a Churchill Fellow.
