Another offering in our Beginner Series, the Calligraphy Society is running a weekly workshop over 6 weeks to learn the Uncial Hand. This beautiful hand dominated writing from the 4th to 8th centuries AD and continued to evolve in the following centuries.
It is probably most famous for its use in the Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels. The letter forms are characterized by broad single strokes using simple round forms and a modernised version has been devised that would probably be best compared to the later 7th to 10th century examples.
Students will also learn the basics of stroke sequence, spacing, and proportion vital for beautiful lettering. If you have already had some instruction but wish to refresh your skills you are also welcome to join the class.
